Wait a second...is this just to say we've been the Alaska?!  Seems to be the closet accessible part of Alaska...
Or is there something you actually want to see in Hyder, AL...besides the obvious natural scenery!  Any National or State Parks?

Not saying it wouldn't be a very scenic drive, just wondering of things to do and see...

Just throwing it out there. long drive.  maybe take two weeks to do the trip?  so probably better think of a different destination?

How about Crater Lake?!

https://goo.gl/maps/5SY1MGuU3iE1BauL9 (https://goo.gl/maps/5SY1MGuU3iE1BauL9)

We could take either route out and/or back. I have looked at AirBnb's and it appears the best bet might be to stay at one of the lodges right at or next to the park.  We should think about booking soon if we want this option.

Sorry for the delay....

We should really pick some dates that work for people!!

Here is the parks website:

https://www.nps.gov/crla/index.htm (https://www.nps.gov/crla/index.htm)

Here are the two lodging options at the park:

https://www.nps.gov/crla/planyourvisit/lodges.htm (https://www.nps.gov/crla/planyourvisit/lodges.htm)

https://www.travelcraterlake.com/ (https://www.travelcraterlake.com/)

Doing a quick search it seems they may already be booked...I will have to call to confirm.

I did find this place about 40 minutes from the park, right on the Crater Lake Highway...

https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/24405403?check_in=2022-06-02&check_out=2022-06-09&guests=1&adults=4&s=67&unique_share_id=869aa875-c3fb-4988-b46f-93840491c067 (https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/24405403?check_in=2022-06-02&check_out=2022-06-09&guests=1&adults=4&s=67&unique_share_id=869aa875-c3fb-4988-b46f-93840491c067)

Or this one same distance, just a little different direction, by Klamath Lake.

Works for me, just do a short trip like the year we went to Wisconsin?

Lets get a date figured out.  Here would be my availability for June.  June doesnt work for everyone we can look into July.

I assume we will be using less days if we take a shorter trip?  Something like Friday to Friday so we only use one weekend?

These dates work for me:
Depart Friday June 3.  Return Friday 10th.  <---Best option for me
Depart Friday June 10.  Return Friday June 17.

If we get to our destination in a day, that would leave us with 5 days of time at our destination.  If you guys think that is too long we can always shorten it up.

Let me know what works for you guys.

I am not available the weekend of June 10th & 11th. We are having an auction for my grandpa and uncles stuff.
I will also, most likely, have a week long work trip in KC sometime during June...nothing diffinitive yet. I will hopefully be able to adjust the work trip around our trip but it will depend on site staff and my colleagues schedules.

If we left on the 3rd and got back the 9th, would that be cutting it too short for the auction?  We could always come back the 8th too, that would probably still give us enough time.

I was looking at places to stay in the UP of Michigan and found some nice places to stay with 4 bedrooms.  Check these out:

On a golf course.  Kind of reminds me of the place we stayed at in Wisconsin.  Even has a bar.  No mention about a garage:
https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/16650451?adults=4&check_in=2022-06-03&check_out=2022-06-09&federated_search_id=6d6bcb5e-7ff3-403c-b033-d04a585eff9b&source_impression_id=p3_1650852250_inFAl1GwNZ%2BZ5OnG

Out of town, but on tar.  Can use the garage.  5 bedrooms:
https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/44445871?adults=4&check_in=2022-06-03&check_out=2022-06-09&federated_search_id=6d6bcb5e-7ff3-403c-b033-d04a585eff9b&source_impression_id=p3_1650852112_b%2Fd425m3gcQw1H7u

Cool location on the water (not Lake Superior).  4 bedrooms.  Garage is not available:
https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/39320530?adults=4&check_in=2022-06-03&check_out=2022-06-09&federated_search_id=6d6bcb5e-7ff3-403c-b033-d04a585eff9b&source_impression_id=p3_1650851962_zDBwIF590Mj0pZcL

Older place but recently remodeled.  Looks to be in town, but right close to Lake Superior.  5 bedrooms.  No mention of a garage:
https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/30269494?adults=4&check_in=2022-06-03&check_out=2022-06-09&federated_search_id=ff3a62cd-c36e-4ea3-9505-908d1352009b&source_impression_id=p3_1650851143_l1IzTBq7VbkeqUsJ

In town, pretty new house.  3 car garage, seems like is included:
https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/39747352?adults=4&check_in=2022-06-03&check_out=2022-06-09&federated_search_id=20bd8e15-98ee-4ce3-951e-cf568778a11f&source_impression_id=p3_1650851717_LYzflBAZDSypUyq2

Just some ideas.  Most of these places are going to be roughly $125 a night per person.  I realize that Nathan and I have different views than Nick & Shawn when it comes to places to stay (amenities vs cost).  If it works better we could do something where Nathan and I stay at one place and Nick and Shawn at another.  For example I found an Airbnb in Copper Harbor MI right by a hotel.
This Airbnb could fit Nathan & I's wish list:
https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/49824331?adults=2&check_in=2022-06-03&check_out=2022-06-09&federated_search_id=2dc56984-7b12-4253-aec3-5f15ec3a4f80&source_impression_id=p3_1650855410_kmQ%2FKIVmHPHIvLcj

And this hotel could fit Nick & Shawn's wish list.  A two bed room would be $55 per person per night:
https://www.minnetonkaresort.com/index.php

Not that I want to split up, but being in two different places wouldn't be much different than staying in two hotel rooms.  Just throwing it out there as an option.

The 3rd through the 9th should work for me.  I think the house in Copper Harbor looks good, no garage but the bikes have been outside before.

Are you saying you would be willing to spend a little more, possibly forfeit a continental breakfast and sleep on the floor and have all 4 of us stay in one small house?  I guess I hadn't proposed that option because I don't want to be the one to sleep on the floor or couch and didn't think anyone else would want to either.

Lets get the date at least locked in.  Shawn said he is good with June 3 to June 9.  Does that work for you guys Nathan & Nick?

Or is that too many days? The 3rd would be a drive day, the 4th through the 8th days at the house, and the 9th a drive day.  That would be 5 days at the house, is that too many in one place?  We could shorten it up by leaving on Saturday the 4th instead or come back on the 8th.  Either way works for me, I'd just like to get dates set then we can move forward with accommodations.

Yeah, the starting of this trip on the 4th sounds good and coming back on the 9th.  I like it!!

I like just leaving on the Saturday (4th) as well...as far as the return I am good with either the 8th or 9th. I have gotten work to move the June trip to KC to the following week,  so no conflicts there.
Title: Re: Trip Rout 2022!!
Post by: Russ on April 28, 2022, 09:47:51 pm
Nick was over tonight and we talked it over a little.  I explained that the blue 2 bedroom house is actually more expensive than this one I had listed:
"Out of town, but on tar.  Can use the garage.  5 bedrooms:"

I had just listed the blue 2 bedroom one along with the hotel just as an example so I wasn't really paying attention to the price that closely for the house.  The hotel was reasonable but the house is actually quite expensive for a 2 bedroom.

So for less money than the blue house we would have a 5 bedroom house with a garage.  I think I talked him into it  ;D

Since I posted the out of town 5 bedroom one, it has been booked for June 9 & 10.  So if we want it we will have to shift our dates.  I do think it is a pretty good value at roughly $1381 for the entire 5 night stay.  Divide that 4 ways for $345.25 each person and divide again by 5 for the nights and it would be just under $70 per night per person.  We would have to leave on Friday the 3rd, do day trips the 4th through the 7th (4 days) and leave on Wednesday the 8th.

If those days work and everyone likes the house and price I think we should get on booking it.  Let me know and if we all agree I can book it.

Hey 2wheel riders, I messed up big time!  It's my dad's 80th birthday that week in June for this cycle trip and I forgot about all that.  Would it be alright to push this motorcycle trip into July???!!  Yo, you picking up what I am throwing down?!  Thanks
Title: Re: Trip Rout 2022!!

July dates that work for me would be:

July 23 through the 28th
July 30 through the August 4th

The house that we were looking at isn't available any weekends in July or August, but we can pick out a date and then search for accommodations after we lock in a date.

Nickoli,

No problem man!  I was also about to write that I forgot my nephews (godson) graduation is on June 5th...so I was just going to propose we go in July or August.

It looks like I may have a work trip the week of July 18th-22nd...so I should be good with Russ' dates.

That's confirm the dates ASAP, so nothing else decides to creep up or because we are getting old we forget!  ;D

Title: Re: Trip Rout 2022!!
Post by: Russ on May 03, 2022, 07:19:43 pm
Good deal, lets plan on that since it works for everyone!

July 23rd through through July 28th.

I'll look around for accommodations for that date range.
Title: Re: Trip Rout 2022!!
Post by: Russ on May 04, 2022, 09:03:19 pm
Well I'm not coming up with much for places to stay in the UP.  This place inst as far into Michigan as I was originally looking, but it fits well for the price, garage & bedrooms:
https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/608652725733340665?check_in=2022-07-23&check_out=2022-07-28&adults=4&children=0&infants=0&source_impression_id=p3_1651714812_W2uwv5tjsERvDtdd

It has 4 bedrooms and 2 baths.  I messaged the owner and they said we could use the garage.  It would be roughly $55 per night per person.

The distance from Hoffman is 313 miles.  A day trip to copper harbor (the northern tip) would be 155 miles.

That's about all I could find.  The other option would be to break the stay up between two places, that might open up more orortunities.

Let me know what you guys think or if you have any other suggested places.

Could visit Duluth from there and the north shore drive!
Title: Re: Trip Rout 2022!!
Post by: Russ on May 04, 2022, 10:12:31 pm
Yes, this location might actually be better than up north in the tip for our 4 days of day trips.  Wouldn't have to go south when leaving and then back north again when coming back.  Lots of lake shore to see!
Title: Re: Trip Rout 2022!!
Post by: Shawn on May 05, 2022, 07:43:19 am
What if we stayed in that area for a night or two then go further East and see the North shoreline of Lake Michigan or maybe Mackinac Island then head back home.
Title: Re: Trip Rout 2022!!
Post by: Nathan on May 05, 2022, 09:59:49 am
I like the place and I like the idea of popping up to Duluth...but I think maybe breaking up the stay makes more sense and I would like to get over to that original area by Copper Harbor.  I know 155 miles doesn't seem far, and it isn't, but google is stating that will take over 3hrs one-way, that makes for a little more tight day trip?!

Also, I have always wanted to go to Mackinac Island!  I just wonder if that is getting a little too far for what we had originally discussed about keeping it short and utilizing less fuel, etc., as well as staying in one place for the duration.  It would be 716 miles for me one-way to St. Ignace, MI.  I am game if others are!  It could be cool to hydro-jet ferry out to the island one day and stay overnight on the island for one night and ferry back the next day.

I am torn here, because on one hand I really want to go to Mackinac Island but I really was looking forward to staying in one place for the length of the trip.

Thoughts?!

Russ, can you work your magic and see how this could lay out stay/locations wise for these options?

I did see this; http://www.thelogcabinn.com/ (http://www.thelogcabinn.com/)

Something like this?

Saturday July 23 - Home to Ironwood
Sunday July 24 - Day trip around Ironwood
Monday July 25 - Ironwood to somewhere by Mackinac Island
Tuesday July 26 - Day trip around Somewhere by Mackinac Island
Wednesday July 27 - Day 1 going home
Thursday July 28 - Day 2 final leg home

My vote would be to just stay at one place and do day trips, but I'm open to multi stops if thats what the rest of the group would like to do.
Title: Re: Trip Rout 2022!!
Post by: Nathan on May 05, 2022, 05:01:32 pm
Russell, I am with you then...lets just stay somewhere the whole trip and do day trips.  I would definitely like to get up to Copper Harbor area, after that I am pretty open.

I kind of think if we go to Mackinac Island maybe we should have at least another day or so...otherwise we are pretty much taking everything with us each day, not really staying anywhere too long.

What do the rest of you gentlemen think?!

I like the idea of staying in copper harbor, if their is a descion for a couple of us to travel further for a couple days and come back to house I would be up for that.
Title: Re: Trip Rout 2022!!
Post by: Russ on May 10, 2022, 10:31:37 pm
Actually the house isn't in Copper Harbor, but would be in driving distance.  I think we should pass on the house that I had proposed.  The guy is being a little shady about answering my questions.  There isn't AC and the place is a duplex, so the outside spaces are shared and he wont answer me about the other half of the house.

I found a different place that could work.  The listing didn't mention a garage but the lady said we could use it for our bikes and was super nice and answered my questions quickly.  It only has 3 bedrooms and 3 beds but there are 2 couches and an air mattress in the living room.  If I chip in a little extra would you be ok with me taking a bedroom Nick?  :D

This place is actually located north a little further toward Copper Harbor, so it wouldn't be such push to get there and back for a day trip.  And if a couple of you want to travel east further for a few days it is reasonable enough that it would be affordable split 2 ways and we'd be there for one last stay before going home if you want.

Split 4 ways it would be roughly $68 per person per night.

Let me know if you guys are onboard and if so I'll get it booked.

Works for me. I think this is a better overall location for getting to Copper Harbor and new points east.
I too will also chip in extra for a bedroom, if you are truly okay with staying on a couch or air mattress Nick, but I guess I would also be open to swapping during the trip if your feelings change.
And if anyone wants to move on I agree the rate is decent enough for splitting two ways instead of four...

House is booked near Chassell MI.
Check in:  Saturday,‌ J‌u‌l‌ ‌2‌3‌,‌ ‌2‌0‌2‌2‌‌ ‌3‌:‌0‌0‌ ‌P‌M‌
Check out:  Thursday,‌ J‌u‌l‌ ‌2‌8‌,‌ ‌2‌0‌2‌2‌‌ 1‌0‌:‌0‌0‌ ‌A‌M‌

There aren't many different roads to take to get there, but I did work up a route that helps us avoid St Cloud and shaves a few miles off too. I have a lunch stop programmed in for a little cafe in Danbury WI.  I'll put it out here if you guys want to take it.
